Does your client have an Irish Pension?

20/5/2022

An Irish pension is a retirement benefit that is paid out to individuals who have worked in Ireland and have made contributions to the Irish social security system. These pensions can take different forms, including the State Pension (Contributory) or the State Pension (Non-Contributory), depending on an individual's eligibility.
In Australia, Irish pensions are assessed by Centrelink as part of the income and assets test for various means-tested benefits, such as the Age Pension or Disability Support Pension. The amount of Irish pension received by an individual is taken into account in determining their overall income, which may affect their eligibility and the amount of payment they receive.
Irish pensions are also subject to taxation in Australia. The tax treatment of Irish pensions depends on whether the individual is classified as a resident or non-resident for tax purposes. For Australian tax residents, Irish pensions are typically treated as assessable income and subject to income tax at the individual's marginal tax rate. However, there may be tax offsets or deductions available to reduce the amount of tax payable.
It's important to note that the tax treatment of Irish pensions in Australia can be complex and may vary depending on individual circumstances. Therefore, it's advisable to seek professional advice from a financial planner or tax specialist to ensure that you are fully informed and understand the implications of receiving an Irish pension while living in Australia.
For Paraplanners, here is a starting guide on how to include an Irish Pension in Xplan;

  1. To include an Irish pension in XPLAN, you can follow these steps:
  2. Navigate to the "Client Details" page for the relevant client in XPLAN.
  3. Select "Add Asset" from the "Assets & Liabilities" section of the page.
  4. In the "Asset Type" drop-down menu, select "Pension."
  5. In the "Provider" field, enter the name of the Irish pension provider.
  6. In the "Description" field, enter a brief description of the pension, such as "Irish State Pension (Contributory)."
  7. In the "Value" field, enter the current value of the pension.
  8. In the "Asset Category" drop-down menu, select "Retirement."
  9. In the "Income" section, select "Add Income."
  10. In the "Income Type" drop-down menu, select "Pension Income."
  11. In the "Provider" field, select the Irish pension provider from the drop-down menu.
  12. In the "Frequency" drop-down menu, select the frequency at which the pension is paid, such as "Monthly" or "Quarterly."
  13. In the "Amount" field, enter the amount of the pension payment.
  14. In the "Start Date" field, enter the date on which the pension payments began.
  15. In the "End Date" field, enter the date on which the pension payments are expected to end.
  16. Click "Save" to add the Irish pension to the client's assets and income in XPLAN.

Once you have added the Irish pension to XPLAN, you can use the software to run reports and projections that take the pension into account, helping you to provide comprehensive financial advice to your clients.

What does a Paraplanner require to prepare a statement of advice for an Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement (LRBA)

12/5/2022

A paraplanner preparing a Statement of Advice (SOA) for a Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement (LRBA) will require several pieces of information. The information required will vary depending on the specific circumstances of the client and the LRBA they are seeking advice on. However, here are some common pieces of information that a paraplanner might need:

  1. Details of the client: This includes their name, age, employment status, income, assets, liabilities, and financial goals.
  2. Details of the LRBA: This includes the type of asset being acquired (e.g., property, shares), the amount being borrowed, the loan term, the interest rate, the loan-to-value ratio, and any other relevant details.
  3. Cash flow analysis: The paraplanner will need to understand the client's cash flow, including their income, expenses, and any other financial commitments, to ensure that they can service the loan.
  4. Risks and benefits: The paraplanner will need to analyze the risks and benefits of the LRBA, including the potential for capital growth, income generation, and tax implications, to determine whether the LRBA is suitable for the client's financial goals and risk tolerance.
  5. Compliance requirements: The paraplanner will need to ensure that the SOA complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, including those set out by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
  6. Investment strategy: The paraplanner will need to assess the client's investment strategy, including their risk profile and investment objectives, to ensure that the LRBA fits within their broader investment portfolio.

Overall, the paraplanner will need to gather a range of information about the client, the LRBA, and the broader financial context to prepare a comprehensive and tailored SOA.

How should a Licenee support their Advisers?

10/5/2022

A financial adviser's licensee in Australia offers a range of services to support financial advisers in providing advice to their clients. Some of the key services that may be provided by a licensee include:

Compliance support: A licensee is responsible for ensuring that financial advisers under its license comply with relevant regulations and standards. This may involve providing guidance on compliance issues, conducting compliance audits, and providing ongoing compliance support.

Training and development: Licensees may provide training and development programs to financial advisers to help them develop the knowledge and skills required to provide high-quality financial advice. This may include training on technical topics such as investment strategies and superannuation, as well as soft skills such as communication and client management.

Access to research and analysis: Licensees may provide financial advisers with access to research and analysis on a wide range of financial products and markets. This can help advisers make informed investment recommendations for their clients.

Technology platforms: Many licensees provide technology platforms that enable financial advisers to manage their clients' investments, track performance, and monitor compliance. These platforms may also include tools for financial planning and modeling.

Business support: Licensees may provide business support services to financial advisers, such as marketing and branding assistance, human resources support, and practice management advice.

Product advice: In some cases, a licensee may also provide product advice to financial advisers. This may involve recommending specific financial products or investment strategies to advisers based on market analysis and performance.

It's important to note that the specific services offered by a licensee may vary depending on the licensee's business model, target market, and other factors. Financial advisers should carefully consider the services offered by a licensee before entering into a relationship to ensure that they meet their needs and those of their clients.
